Congress remains in session after Saturday night’s passage of a 45-day extension of government funding, a <a href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/federal-government-shutdown-deadline-d714a1ef?mod=article_inline">surprise breakthrough</a> after Washington universally expected the Federal government to shut down amid House Republican infighting.

A small right-wing group of Republicans will attempt to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a high-stakes showdown for both McCarthy and his antagonists.

The House will be in <a href="https://www.majorityleader.gov/schedule/weekly-schedule.htm">session</a> tonight through Thursday, <a href="https://rules.house.gov/">taking up</a> appropriations legislation as Republicans look to strengthen their hand in negotiations ahead of the next government funding deadline in mid-November.

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and a handful of other members <a href="https://rollcall.com/2023/10/01/gaetz-plans-move-to-oust-mccarthy-says-gop-needs-new-leader/">plan</a> to file a motion to vacate the chair, seeking to push McCarthy out as speaker.

The outcome of Gaetz’s move on McCarthy will have <a href="https://punchbowl.news/archive/10223-punchbowl-news-am/">enormous implications</a> for the functioning of Congress for the next 15 months.

The House was previously scheduled to be in recess this week, so no committee hearings are scheduled; if any committees schedule hearings this week they will be found <a href="https://www.house.gov/legislative-activity">here</a>.

The Senate will be in <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/floor_activity_pail.htm">session</a> tomorrow through Friday, <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/executive_calendar/xcalv.pdf">voting</a> on Biden’s judicial and administrative nominees.

The Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday will hold a <a href="https://www.commerce.senate.gov/2023/10/chips-and-science-implementation-and-oversight">hearing</a> on CHIPS and Science Act implementation, with Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.

Also Wednesday, the Foreign Relations Committee will hold an oversight <a href="https://www.foreign.senate.gov/hearings/build-act-reauthorization-and-development-finance-corporation-oversight">hearing</a> on the Development Finance Corporation.

Today, the president will <a href="https://www.forth.news/whpool/6519ff24d2fcafcb79d4031d">celebrate</a> the Americans with Disabilities Act and hold a meeting with his Cabinet.

Biden’s schedule the rest of this week is uncertain as the White House previously <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2023/09/30/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-and-office-of-management-and-budget-director-shalanda-young-2/">expected</a> to be managing a government shutdown.
